I believe in using self-host for my emailing solutions. However, it does suffer in terms of deliverability. I have tried my best to learn how I can inbox my emails to Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. but to no avail.
Then come Kenny's tutorial where I jumped right into it. He did not disappoint.
My average open rates are at least 4%-5%, pretty much the same open rate if I were to use Aweber or GetResponse.
The setup is not hard, but it does take time, and the time spent is worth it. Plus, Kenny is always just a message away to help you out.
